“Challenges and Opportunities for Asian and Asian American Churches” is the theme of the 2012 Asian Conference and Asian Caucus Convocation to be held Monday through Wednesday, Aug. 20-22, at First Baptist Church, Waltham, Mass. The event is sponsored by American Baptist Home Mission Societies (ABHMS) and the Asian American Baptist Caucus (AABC).

The event welcomes the participation of diverse ethnic ministries to encourage connections and find common grounds in mission and ministry, according to the Rev. Florence Li, ABHMS national coordinator of Intercultural Ministries and Asian churches strategist.

“Living out our faith as it relates uniquely to one’s heritage and identity can be a challenge in a diverse, changing world,” says Li. “Are we willing to accept this ministry challenge and take our faith to a higher level? I invite you to come and experience what God can do among various faith journeys.”

Keynote speakers are Dr. Russell Yee and Dr. Sydney Park. Author of “Worship on the Way: Exploring Asian North American Christian Experience” (Judson Press, 2012), Yee is an ordained American Baptist minister on the pastoral staff of New Hope Covenant Church, Oakland, Calif. He has been an adjunct professor at Fuller Theological Seminary, Pasadena, Calif., since 1999. A third-generation Asian-American, he has directed several groundbreaking contextualized worship projects.

An editor of “Honoring the Generations: Learning with Asian North American Congregations” (Judson Press, 2012), Park is a biblical scholar and assistant professor at Beeson Divinity School, Birmingham, Ala. She is co-author of  “The Post-Racial Church: A Biblical Framework for Multiethnic Reconciliation” (Kregel, 2011).

Conference highlights will include an Intergenerational Café, Asian worship and presentations on ABHMS’ Intercultural Ministries and church administration.

Convocation highlights will include a commemorative Judson tour and a presentation titled “Dialoguing at the Grassroots: Moving Forward in our Transitional Journey Toward an Alliance.”

Registration fee is $60 until midnight on July 31 and $80 after July 31.
