When a homeless man began attending the church of American Baptist Home Mission Societies (ABHMS) staff member Tondolayo Duncan, she passed along his request for a Bible to Judson Press.
The man—who later became a Christian—is only one example of the countless lives that have been touched by Judson Press, a ministry of ABHMS. In fact, through its “Send-a-Blessing” outreach, Judson Press regularly ships such publications as magazines, books and Bibles—free of charge—to those in need.
In response to requests in 2011 from prisoners, members of the armed services, libraries and nonprofit programs, Judson Press donated 5,991 copies of The Secret Place, a quarterly periodical of daily devotions, and 517 “Books Like New” that can’t be sold at full retail price because of slight use.
“God truly does work behind the scenes,” writes a Camp Hill, Pa., inmate in a November 2011 letter that thanks Judson Press for The Secret Place. “Because someone cared enough for almost four years to see I was receiving God’s Word made me want to change the disastrous life I once lived and to read these stories. Some have impacted my life, and God is working in my life.”
Send-a-Blessing’s postage and shipping costs are covered by various types of donations. Individuals have sent cash and checks to the ministry via postal mail. The Secret Place’s subscription form allows customers to allocate a contribution to the ministry. Churches and individuals often donate credits from their Judson Press purchase accounts, and ABHMS staff members have contributed as well. In 2011, Judson Press began assigning one dollar from the sale of every copy of its “Ministry with Prisoners & Families: The Way Forward,” by W. Wilson Goode Sr., Charles E. Lewis Jr. and Harold Dean Trulear to Send-a-Blessing.
“One of the most meaningful parts of our work is to be able to respond directly and establish relationships with people who want to give and with those who have a need. Our customers are amazing,” says Laura Alden, publisher of Judson Press and associate executive director of publishing at ABHMS. “Especially in this economy, it’s moving to witness these efforts—to make sure someone has access to a Bible, a devotional guide, a Christian book. It truly is a blessing.”
