Arizona Hopi Mission Project — June 2012

Join us as we reach the Hopi people with a living message and the power of Christ in 2012. American Baptist Home Mission Societies (ABHMS) is delighted to work with American Baptist (AB) Men as it celebrates 90 years of ministry by building new capacity for ministry on the Hopi Reservation.

The Arizona Hopi Mission Project—a partnership of ABHMS and AB Men—is set to meet the following specific needs at Sunlight Mission Church, Second Mesa, Ariz.:

• Church building: electrical work; heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) repair or installation; drain system installation; wheelchair ramp completion; parking pad creation; doorway widening.


• Water tank removal and placement of holding tank and filtration system in pump house: aging galvanized steel water tank is an estimated 10 feet in diameter and 5 feet high; sits on collapsing 10-foot cinder block; currently supplies undrinkable water to church, parsonage and two residences for laundry and showers.


• Community center: window replacement; HVAC repair; septic system repair; construction of small two-story attachment to back of center for nursery/visitor lodging and temporary housing and bath with at least three showers for new believers; currently used for instruction, Bible study, playtime and various group meetings, such as “Set Free” addiction recovery ministry.


• Refurbishing of stone retaining walls.


• Lighting of basketball court.


• Parsonage: replacement of swamp cooler; fixing of septic system ventilation; structural repair to floor of bathroom/mud room.


• Razing of shed to make room for additional housing.


• Maintenance at Hopi Mission School.

• Needed is $30,000 for materials, professional labor, equipment and logistics.

If enough of us answer God’s call to mission, the outreach of this project can touch other ministries on the Hopi Reservation, such as First Mesa Baptist Church. The needs are many, and opportunities to make a difference abound.
