Transformation

The Congregational Transformation Report issued on June 15, 2007, shows wide-spread commitment to congregational transformation among American Baptists.

22 of the 34 American Baptist regions responded to a recent survey about transformation initiatives in their churches. Each region had developed an approach tailored to their specific context. Some held large events, some focused on selected churches' clergy and lay leadership, some held training sessions over a period of months or years. These regions reported that more than 660 churches participated in these events.

In addition to these approaches, some regions also participated in broader initiatives.

The Nehemiah Network is an association of northeast regions. Pastors in this network are selected for an intensive three-year leadership training course focussed around a yearly training retreat let by prominent specialists in missional church, coaching, etc., Regular peer group meetings throughout the year with a trained mentor, required readings and specific goal planning round out the training. National Ministries partners in this effort by providing financial and staff support. Approximately 20 pastors from these regions have participated in the training.

Together in Ministry is a Ministers Council initiative. The Lilly Endowment has provided $3 million in funding for this project through its Sustaining Pastoral Excellence Initiative. Together in Ministry supports ministers through collegial covenant groups, national conferences for pastoral leaders, and the strengthening of constituent councils. More than 1,000 pastoral leaders have participated since the project began in 2003.
